When words cease to have real meaning

What does the word “Hero” mean?

If everyone is a hero does it still mean anything?

Why would I want to be “Beautiful” if everyone and everything is beautiful? A word that used have great depth of meaning has – by being applied to everything – lost any real meaning.

Genius, one of a kind, brave, revolutionary, awesome – all words or phrases that have lost their  specialness – that quality that made us strive for them.

The same works for negative words.

Evil has been used to describe so many things is might as well be beige.

And epic has officially jumped the shark.

Why do we do this to words? Over apply them until they have lost any trace of their original meaning and importance.

I don’t have an answer for this.

I just keep thinking about it.

Thoughts?
