The Importance of Cake

I was listening to The Moth podcast not too long ago and there was a young man who informed his audience that he had found the best mantra. When he’s feeling stressed he says to himself, “I want to feel like I feel when I’m about to eat cake.” Make sense, doesn’t it? Because when people are about to eat cake, what do they feel? Anticipation, excitement, and joy feature largely when we begin to think about cake. Cake is a big deal. It’s only for special events. Cake gets offered at birthdays, graduations, weddings, baby showers and funerals. No matter what the occasion, someone is bringing a cake. In fact, it’s a pretty good sign that an event is a major occasion if a cake shows up. If you’re lucky, it’s a good one.

As we enter into Christmas season with its attendant stress with relationships, shopping and holiday parties, may we all feel like feel when we’re about to eat cake and may it be a most excellent.
