An Australian Noel
I can’t believe how quickly Christmas is screeching up on us this year. I’m actually starting to look forward to Christmas as the work year winds down and my overtired mind allows itself to clear some space for family, food, friends and Christmas.
It never fails to amaze me that the northern hemisphere is frigid and snow-covered for Christmas, while here in Australia we are starting our summer and generally enjoying pleasantly sunny weather. Today was our first hot day of the summer – the mercury hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and we are all limp and pallid as a result.
I am so glad that we now have some beautiful Australian Christmas carols that reflect our Yuletide experience. While carols about snow and winter are beautiful, they make no logical sense here in the Southern Hemisphere! So here is one of my favourite Australian Christmas carols that I sang for years and years in the various choirs to which I belonged – I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved singing it.
